The Children's Aid Society

For my tweet of the week winnings I decided to give my money to The Children’s Aid Society. I found this organization after searching through Charity Navigator for an organization that piqued my interest. The Children’s Aid Society received a 4 star rating for the past 12 years, which allowed me to feel confident that the money would be used effectively. The purpose of this non-profit organization is to help the poorest families in the 5 boroughs of New York City and Westchester overcome the problems associated with poverty. This is a huge organization with expenses over $100 million a year, but this did not make me think the money would not go to good use. It’s high rating on charity navigator and online reviews show that the organization delivers results. Looking on its website you can also find the projects and individuals that the money helps out; providing me with both quantitative data and heartwarming stories. When donating I was able to choose the part of the organization that I wanted the money to go to. I ended up choosing community schools since I feel that the education system in the poorest areas are in need of a lot of resources. The $36 may not make or break this institution, but if it helps out at least one child that's all that matters.

  1. Hey Adam, I thought it was awesome how you looked back at the organizations history in making your decision. I also thought that it was interesting that you chose to donate to an organization that is a bit larger. I think, as a class, we tend to look toward donations that will have a tangible impact. Examples of this are like buying a goat, or funding a child's education. You know your exact impact in a small organization, with a larger organization, you could be doing the same thing, but you won't necessarily be told. Your money could be going toward a program that gives to more than just a few people, but you can quantify the exact impact. I think this was an awesome way to spend your money and I commend your efforts.
